Opt-out organ donor system preferred by three-quarters of English people, poll finds
The proposed new system would allow any person opposed to donating their organs to opt out
Almost three-quarters of English people are in favour of an opt-out organ donor system, new research shows.
A survey by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) found that 74% of people are in favour of such a system - where people are registered as a potential donor unless they state otherwise.
The poll of 2,000 people in England comes ahead of a debate in the House of Commons on Friday on a new Bill which would introduce such a system in England.
The BHF is urging people to lobby their MPs ahead of the debate.
Its survey also found that among those who were not in favour of a change in the law, 42% said they were put off by concerns that they would not be able to opt out or would find it difficult to do so.
The charity said the proposed new system would allow any person opposed to donating their organs to opt out.
Its poll also showed that many members of the public underestimate how many people are on the organ transplant waiting list and how many people die while waiting for anorgan.
NHS Blood and Transplant figures show that nearly 6,300 people are currently on the UKorgan transplant waiting list.
And nearly 500 people died last year while on the waiting list, or being taken off the list after becoming too unwell for transplant.
The BHF said its poll also showed that many people are not aware of family members' wishes when it comes to organ donation.
Simon Gillespie, chief executive at the British Heart Foundation, said: "There is a desperate shortage of organs in the UK and introducing an opt-out system in England will better reflect the views of the general public and give hope to those currently waiting for a transplant they so desperately need.
"We are urging everyone to encourage their local MP to attend Parliament this Friday to debate a Bill that could save lives."
An opt-out system has been operating in Wales since December 2015, and in June last year the Scottish Government announced plans to move to a soft opt-out system.
Commenting on the poll, Sally Johnson, director of organ donation and transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "Under the proposed system you would be a donor unless you don't want to donate.
"But if you support organ donation you don't need to wait. Tell your family now that you want to become a life-saving donor. People are dying every day in need of a donatedorgan."
The BHF has set up a web form to enable people to write to their MP to urge them to attend the debate, which can be found at: bhf.org.uk/organdonation.

Dear Andrea my donor ❤️
Today 6 years ago you did something incredible, something that of superhero’s!! You saved my life! But I didn’t just want to be alive, I wanted to be here with Brandon and Isabelle and be their mum and watch them grow, well because of you I’ve been able to do exactly that and believe me when I say I have seen almost everything and what amazing people they have and continue to become! We owe our life together to you as without you non of this would have been possible!! I hope I’m making you proud and your family! I know it’s 6 years of life for me, but it also means 6 years that sadly you’ve not been here and I’m thinking of you and your family and how hard it must be at this time!
So what I have done to celebrate 6 years of life? Well me and the kids stayed in a “posh” hotel last night, which was lovely, we love our little adventures together, we all sat on this huge bed and pigged out on pizza and junk! One of the kids said this is life lol 🙄 but it was just us 3 together .. perfect👌🏼
And tonight Ive been out for a lovely meal with my sister and close friends whom I am supported and loved by so much all the way and We raised a glass to you 🥂! (Thank you Caroline and Jill for the surprise xx)
Then to finish off as you are never far from my thoughts.. we sent 6 balloons up into the sky to you, (one for each year) each with all the things we’ve done in the last 6years! We hope they make you smile 😃!
Some people don’t understand all of this .. but that’s ok, I don’t claim to be worse off or better off than anyone I simply share MY journey .. if it annoys anyone, well that’s your problem not mine .. but you know what if sharing my journey makes my donor proud, my children proud, inspires just one person or even SAVES one persons life then it’s all 100% worth it!
Thank you to all those who continue to love and support me, Brandon and Isabelle!! From the bottom of my heart it means so much xx
Happy 6th Anniversary to my/your beautiful lungs ... 2192 days of breathing easy ❤️
